There is a great deal of thought out there that the supply is quite adequate for current demand and that prices are up by action of speculators. In other words, greed is driving the price of gas more than demand. Despite all of this, I think the effect of making "we" in the U.S. more energy-aware is a positive result of a consumer crisis situation. (i.e. The bit of lemonade from the lemons.) Perhaps transit will morph from a "lifeline" to a "lifestyle" choice at the hands of high gas prices. Another death knoll to gas-tax-funded projects: more fuel efficient/hybrid cars.
